![]() The floor mounted needle exchange bin holds two 22 litre needle bins / burnbins and also stores the plastic lids as well for operator convenience. We did not manufacture a syringe bin cabinet to take 60 litre plastic sharps bins because unlike the 22 litre bin, the 60 litre container DOES NOT comply with U.N. Packing Group ll approval standard. |

Observations on an amnesty Drug Dump scheme using the safe drug deposit cabinets.During the time of the field testing period, an Essex District Council requested the use of the "letterbox bins" as they referred to them. The council were organizing a Drug Dump Week where the general public could hand in any drug paraphernalia including sharps, old medicines, drugs etc. Around the area, various collecting points were set up to receive the items. Most of the collection points involved the handing in of medicines etc., over the counter to a pharmacist or GP receptionist. However, at some of the drop off points, the Drug collection bins were used. At these points the rate of returns was far greater. Please see comparison table below Fig.1. Conclusions drawn from this experiment were as follows: 1. The public was more receptive to using the letterbox cabinet, than giving sharps and other drug paraphernalia over the counter. This method was confidential and anonymous in use. 2. Pharmacist and GP surgeries preferred the drug bin usage as it freed up an already busy staff. 3. The fronts of the amnesty bins allowed for publicity materials to be displayed to highlight the purpose of the scheme. The advertising material and the drug bin together gave a self explanatory focal point for the disposal of drugs etc.

As can be seen above, the cabinet is easy to use but also secure. The unique swing counter balance design, keeps the loading hatch in a normally closed position. Inside the needle cabinet, a baffle is fitted which is also a visible deterrent to stop persons trying to retrieve contents and facilitates a one way loading system which stops tampering. |
