Its also 20 minutes from  the fabulous Antequera golfing facilities.

Estepa in Andalucia

Situated in the heart of Andalucia, the land of flamenco and gypsy guitars, is Estepa,  a lively and bustling town with a rich and interesting history. Originally it was a Carthaginian settlement called Astapa, then, during the Punic wars with Rome, it took the North African side. When the Romans took the town in 208 BC they found that the inhabitants had burned all their possessions and killed themselves rather than surrender. As the own grew again it was called by the Roman name of Ostippo. Later, with the Moorish occupation it was renamed Istabba, and then, finally, Estepa.

Because of the beauty of its monumental heritage the town was classified as a National Heritage site in 1965. If you were to put a canopy over Estepa you would have the largest museum in the world.

More recently, in the 19th century, the Bandeloros used the mountains around Estepa to hide out and make forays into the surrounding towns and villages.

Live the dream, estepa street

This is a typical street in Estepa.

Estepa is the birthplace and the home of Mantecados and Polverones, the cakes and biscuits that are eaten at times of holiday and festivals. In the run up to Christmas and Easter the whole town smells as if you could eat it! Also in Estepa is the factory where the local Anisette liqueur is made. From the olive groves that surround the town comes the Olio de Estepa – the home produced olive oil.
